Several dozen firefighters were mobilized on Friday to extinguish the flames which were spreading in a shopping center in Meylan, near Grenoble.
A fire in a shopping center located in Meylan (Isère), on the north-eastern outskirts of Grenoble, caused significant damage on Friday, without causing any casualties, AFP learned from the department prefecture.
About 70 firefighters were mobilized on the fire, which broke out around 3 p.m. and was being brought under control shortly after 8 p.m., the prefecture said.
On the eve of 1998, the structure of the building, arbitrating bank branches, a restaurant, an optician or even a dental office, did not allow firefighters to enter to fight the flames from the inside.
A total of 2100 square meters were affected.
The cause of the fire still unknown
Those present were evacuated and a security perimeter was quickly set up to protect nearby buildings, including a large Carrefour center.
Work had recently been carried out on the roof, said the prefecture, while stressing that the origin of the fire remained unknown for the moment.
