Massive explosion on Long Island devastates businesses, injures – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – An explosion rocked a Long Island neighborhood shortly after midnight, injuring at least one person and causing a fire that spread to nearby buildings.

Multiple firefighting units rushed to the scene on Guy Lombardo Avenue near West Merrick Road in Freeport on Friday to douse the flames that erupted after an explosion in what appeared to be a restaurant. Not much was left of the business as the fire continued to spread.

At least one person was seen being transported on a stretcher to an ambulance. A fire officer at the scene said two firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to reports from our sister network NBC 4 New York.

It is unclear what caused the explosion and no other details were immediately available.

This is a developing story.
