A fire broke out in a terraced house on Strijenstraat in Oosterhout, leaving a man seriously injured on Friday night around half past twelve. It may be related to the occupant of the house, the fire department reports. The fire started after a heavy explosion.
The explosion left the front of the house on the street. “There is a suspected gas explosion or fireworks, or both,” the Department of Safety reports. “There is no reason to think this is an attack.”
As a precaution, residents of nine houses were evacuated. The neighbors took care of them. Residents of five of the nine houses were allowed to return to their homes shortly before 2am. “Unfortunately, residents of four homes will have to stay elsewhere for the night,” the Department of Safety said.
Mayor Buijs van Oosterhout spoke to the residents. The Strijenstraat will be closed for a long time.
Brand
The explosion caused extensive damage to the front and back of the house. Around a quarter past one, the Safety Department reported that the fire was under control, and three quarters of an hour later the fire was under control.
The fire brigade deployed a lot of equipment to ensure that the fire did not spread to other homes. The fire brigade arrived at the site with, among other things, three tankers, an aerial work platform and special vehicles that provide water transport.
