Hanoi (VNA) – A total of nearly 30,000 people in Vietnam’s northern provinces will be evacuated as part of storm response efforts Blade.
The information was released today during an online meeting on storm preparations held by the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, attended by representatives from 27 northern and central provinces of Vietnam.
The meeting was chaired by Vice Premier Tran Luu Quang, who is also head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and chairman of the National Incident Response, Disaster, Search and Rescue Committee.
On the occasion, it was reported that following the dispatch issued by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the Talim storm, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, ministries, branches and localities have released statements guiding disaster response activities.
According to a report from the Border Force Command, as of six in the morning today, more than 52,200 ships and 226,000 people have been informed about the path of the storm. There are currently no active vessels in the danger zones.
According to the plans, the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh have banned sea fishing from 12 noon today, while the city of Hai Phong will start the ban from 7 a.m. the night.
Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, rated Talim as one of the strongest storms to hit the northern region of Vietnam in the past three to five years.
The storm will directly affect mainland Vietnam from morning to noon on July 18, Mai Van Khiem reported. Starting at noon and tomorrow afternoon, the wind will be at its most dangerous stage.
According to forecasts, the storm Talim will cause massive flooding in the northern region and Thanh Hoa province. The precipitation from July 18 to 22 could reach 300 to 500 millimeters, even higher than 700 millimeters.
Van Khiem reiterated that heavy rains during and after the storm can cause the greatest danger, especially for the northern mountainous provinces, as it can lead to flash floods and landslides.
The Deputy Prime Minister demanded the localities to implement well the Prime Minister’s instructions on storm prevention and control issued yesterday to minimize the damage./.
