Spanish police seized a huge amount of drugs this week. A live cattle ship was raided in the Canary Islands. The result: 4.5 tons of cocaine worth at least $114 million.
The ship, the Orion V, flies the Tongolean flag and had already stopped in ports in twelve countries. So there would have been many more drugs on board.
The police were very busy unloading dozens of boxes of cocaine at the port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. A total of 28 people have been arrested for drug smuggling.
On Saturday, the national police confirmed that they had been monitoring the ship for some time. In collaboration with the police in Togo and the US anti-drug unit DEA, they raided the Orion V.
The drug smugglers have started using cattle because it is then much more difficult for the police to check the cargo. According to the police, it is a trend that international drug organizations are constantly coming up with different ways to get drugs from South America to Europe. “They are reinventing themselves and the use of animals is a new low,” said the Spanish police.
