These demonstrations, whose most prominent title was “Sinai is a red line” and “No to the displacement of Palestinians,” came after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi confirmed his rejection of Israeli attempts to transfer the residents of the Gaza Strip to Sinai, suggesting that they be transferred to the Negev Desert if necessary. .

Crowding in the fields

Friday’s demonstrations are the strongest in Egypt in years. Citizens of all ages gathered in Egypt’s governorates, from the far north in Alexandria to the far south in Aswan.

These include Al-Nasr Street Square in Nasr City in Cairo Governorate, Al-Hosary Square in Giza, Al-Massada Square in Qalyubia, 3 July Square in Ismailia Governorate, Clock Square in Qena Governorate, Clock Square in Damietta Governorate, Al-Sawaqi Square in Fayoum Governorate, and Al-Saha Square in Kharga. Not only young people and adults, but also children participated in expressing their opinion regarding the current events. The demonstrators carried the Egyptian flag, and some of them also carried the Palestinian flag and the Palestinian keffiyeh. The presence of Al-Azhar and church men was prominent, amid strict measures by the security services to secure the demonstrators.

Protest signs

Since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip, after the attack launched against it by the Palestinian factions on October 7, there have been calls issued by the Israeli army spokesman to the residents of Gaza to leave their homes and head towards the south, that is, towards the Egyptian border.

This raised Egyptian suspicion of Israeli intentions to displace Palestinians to the Sinai Peninsula, which was confirmed by the leader of the “Israel Our Home” party, Danny Ayalon, a party participating in the war government formed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in cooperation with former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, When he explicitly called on the Palestinians to head to the neighboring Egyptian Sinai.

In a press conference held with German Chancellor Olaf Schulz in Cairo on Wednesday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said that the attacks occurring in the Gaza Strip are “an attempt to push the population and civilians to flee towards Sinai,” stressing the Egyptians’ rejection of this matter. He suggested that “if it is necessary to transfer the citizens of the Gaza Strip outside it until the end of military operations, Israel can transfer them to the Negev Desert.”

He also stressed that if he called on the Egyptians to take to the streets to express their rejection of the displacement of Palestinians to Sinai, they would go out to the squares and express their rejection.

During the demonstrations, the protesters raised banners summarizing their opinions, including “Sinai is a red danger,” “Sinai is not an alternative homeland,” “The Egyptian people support the Palestinian cause,” “No to the liquidation of the Palestinian cause,” “No to the displacement of the Palestinian people,” “We are with you, President.” Netanyahu is a war criminal,” and “Palestine is Arab.”

The demonstrators also chanted slogans with these meanings, and in solidarity with the defenseless residents suffering from Israeli bombing and siege.
