Massive demonstration in Murcia in defense of the Mar Menor | Radio Murcia

185 associations and groups have joined this Thursday, October 7, in the great protest called in defense of the Mar Menor to demand solutions to its deterioration and after the last environmental crisis of last August. Some 70,000 people, according to the organizers, have participated in the demonstration that started from two different points in the city of Murcia: in front of the headquarters of the Government Delegation and in front of San Esteban, headquarters of the Regional Government.

From the first of these points, Radio Murcia-Cadena SER has carried out a follow-up of this massive event with special coverage and through the broadcast on streaming from the start of the march. The organizers, some of whom we have heard live, ask the administrations to sit down to work in a coordinated way and act urgently to stop the degradation of the salty lagoon.

Two symbols of the demands around the salty lagoon have been omnipresent this Thursday: the black t-shirts and the seahorse, represented on banners, posters, clothing and even in costumes with which some have been seen. This protected species is also the emblem of the platform promoted by the Popular Legislative Initiative that aims to ensure that the Mar Menor has its own legal personality. Its volunteers have made themselves known by collecting accessions to reach the 500,000 signatures they require.

At the height of the Plaza de la Fuensanta, the two marches have come together, placing in front of them the banner “SOS Mar Menor. For a Living Mar Menor”, behind which representatives of the different convening organizations have been placed.

The tour has concluded in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, whose inaction the protesters blame the situation of the Mar Menor. “This summer the Mar Menor spat in our faces the mistreatment and indifference to which it has been subjected for so many decades,” said Isabel Rubio, representative of Pacto Por el Mar Menor.

In addition to reading their demands, the protest day has been crowned with music: “Sol y sal”, by Cartagena’s Nunatak, has sounded as a farewell, already converted into an anthem of the Mar Menor.

Representatives of unions, political parties, environmental organizations, neighborhood associations and platforms from all parts of the Region, not only from the Mar Menor, have joined this tour, animated at different points by the presence of two batucadas.
