Baghdad thieves carried sacks of money out of the bank
Around $2.5 billion was stolen in a bank robbery in Iraq. Details of the crime are now coming to light. Much points to the country’s corrupt elite.
It happened in broad daylight. Not once, but several times. More precisely: for weeks. Armored vehicles drove up to a branch of the state-owned Rafidain Bank in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and armed security guards loaded sacks of cash on them. It later emerged that it was the largest bank robbery in history. A crime that hardly anyone abroad knows about. Around $2.5 billion was stolen between September 2021 and August 2022. All indications point to an inside job.
