Massive Alligator Fabio Stuns Onlookers as it Struts Across Florida Reserve Path
Florida is renowned for its alligators, but every once in a while, a gator comes along that truly stands out from the rest. Meet Fabio, the larger-than-life alligator that has been captivating visitors at the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland since 2022.
Ken Bergquist, a regular visitor to the reserve, had caught glimpses of Fabio lying on the trail, basking in the sun. However, it wasn’t until February 3rd that he witnessed the gator in action. Bergquist and his wife Lisa were in for a surprise when they saw Fabio swimming towards the trail from afar. The massive alligator emerged from the water, pulling itself onto the path with its enormous body, and slowly strutted across to the astonishment of onlookers.
Describing the encounter, Bergquist said, “He’s definitely 12 feet long, possibly a few inches more. I’ve seen many cross trails, but never a really huge one. I was in awe.” Fabio’s size left everyone in awe, and while it’s difficult to determine if he is the largest gator in the reserve, he is undoubtedly one of the biggest.
To put Fabio’s size into perspective, Bergquist compared him to another 9-foot alligator they had seen just a week earlier. The stark contrast between the two showcased Fabio’s immense proportions. “Most times gators are seen in water. When they’re walking on land, you can really see how big they are. It’s like seeing a dinosaur,” Bergquist remarked.
The Circle B Bar Reserve, spanning over 1,267 acres in Polk County, offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness Florida’s iconic reptiles in their natural habitat. The reserve is known for its gators’ impressive feats, such as climbing fences, engaging in territorial disputes, and showcasing their powerful jaws. However, it’s the sheer size of the gators that call this reserve home that continues to astonish visitors.
In a video shared by the Lakeland Police Department in 2017, another enormous alligator was seen crossing a path in the reserve with a similar slow strut. The reserve tends to be busiest during the winter months when seasonal residents, affectionately known as “snowbirds,” flock to Florida, and visitors frequent the park on weekends.
On February 3rd, a crowd of visitors gathered to witness Fabio’s grand performance. Despite being a regular at the reserve, Bergquist admitted that seeing reptiles of this magnitude up close still brings excitement. “Oh, I loved seeing it!” he exclaimed.
The Circle B Bar Reserve is located approximately 40 miles east of Tampa, making it easily accessible for both locals and tourists alike. So, if you’re ever in the area and want to catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures, be sure to visit this remarkable Florida reserve.
