Massimo Bottura, the energetic Italian chef, does not let the Corona crisis get it down. Time and again he shows humor, for example with his appearance in the new children’s series Waffel und Mochi on Netflix, and entrepreneurship – plans for a Gucchi-Osteria in Tokyo were recently announced. Now there is also news from his charitable organization Food for Soul, which he has been running with his wife Lara Gilmore since 2016. Two projects in the USA are showing signs of life and are about to open this year, which has been long awaited.
The Refettorio Ambrosiano, which opened in 2015, is considered a showcase project for social engagement. Over the years, other refettorios were added, for example in Paris and London. The Refettorios have meanwhile become an international chain with numerous open and planned locations. It is public kitchens that fight food waste by turning scrap-saved food into delicious menus by top chefs. These are then served to needy people such as the homeless and refugees for little money.
Refettorio New York: More than just a soup kitchen
In the USA, the two refettorios have been operating behind the curtain for months. Hundreds of meals have already been delivered to socially disadvantaged people. Now the official opening is due. The Refettorio in the Bronx was expected in New York, but the address at which the doors will open in autumn has now been announced: the Emanuel AME Church in Harlem. As soon as the location is accessible, a job training program by the organization Youth Action Youth Build will also take place there.
“Imagine a jam session where the most amazing artists perform, all together to lift souls. What we do in Harlem is exactly the same thing, a song of collaboration that brings together the efforts of Food for Soul and our partners to make something happen. We are building our new Refettorios walls, but we cannot stand idly by when we are most needed, ”says Bottura.
