“Massey-Vanier Secondary School Wins Big at WorldStride Heritage Festival”

MUSIC. Forty-seven students in the music program of 3e4e et 5e secondary school from Massey-Vanier took part in the harmony and jazz competition, the WorldStride Heritage Festival, in New York at the end of April. Massey-Vanier left the United States with a host of prizes, including one given to the school with the highest combined rating.

“They swept everything it was possible to snatch in terms of prizes! said one of the program’s teachers, Véronique Gagnon. There must have been around 800 young people at the competition. »

The wind orchestra of the three levels and the jazz formation of 5e high school both received a Gold Mention and the Outstanding Bang Trophy, for achieving a mark above 92%.

Moreover, the orchestra also won the Adjudicator Award for having had the best score of all the competing ensembles.

“We practice in our room, in front of the walls, they are told that they are good by the teachers, but hey, it’s a bit like your parents who tell you that you are good! recounted one of the teachers of the program, Pascal Martin. There, at least, they have proof that they are good for real. It made them very proud. »

For his part, Nicolas Vaillant obtained an individual prize for his solo in a jazz piece.

These results also earned the school its pass to the Festival of Gold, to be held next year in San Francisco.

“People involved in the music program are working hard to develop it,” said school principal Jean-Luc Pitre. With the pandemic, we are in an era where it seems that music has been left aside for health reasons, we are restarting the machine and it is pleasant to see that the staff who work with the students and the quality that is being here. »

IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC

Mr. Pitre indicates that learning to play a musical instrument is a lever to support student success.

The students met by the Journal confirm this.

“I started in elementary school and the music program is what brings me to school! said Gabrielle Gélinas, who plays the tuba. At the awards ceremony, people were looking for Quebec, which had won everything, it was nice to know that we were representing our province. »

“I started in 2e secondary school, music opened up a new world for me, testified alto saxophonist Nicolas Vaillant. It made me discover jazz too, which has become my passion now. »

“I play music because it’s beautiful to hear and it’s relaxing,” said Alyssa Brazeau, euphonium player. I started in elementary school, I loved my teacher and I continued. »

“At the beginning, when I started in primary school, it was more out of curiosity, but as I continue, I like to improve in what I do and this is an area where you can see results by pushing harder” , said tenor saxophonist Rafael Bourassa.
