Contrary to the special spatial planning for tourism, which was recently characterized by the official opposition as a new “greying” of the islands and islets of the Eastern Aegean, Giorgos Gerapetritis presented himself during the “parliamentary briefing” of the “blue” members of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee Parliamentary affairs.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is waiting for Hakan Fidan in Athens in the beginning of November as part of the Greek-Turkish negotiations, is said to have stressed that he has serious objections to the new zoning framework for tourism drawn up by the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
In this pattern, Mr. Gerapetritis argued that the zoning will be reviewed and will not “pass like this”, reassuring the “blue” MPs. It is recalled that recently, on the issue in question, 21 SYRIZA MPs – on the initiative of Rena Dourou – submitted a related Question on the subject: “Brakhonisides in the Aegean without EEZ & continental shelf”.
More specifically, the MPs of the official opposition noted:
“According to the proposed Plan posted for consultation, it is foreseen to ban tourist development on Greek islands, including uninhabited islands and islets without economic activity infrastructure. It is known that according to the international law of the sea, the absence of economic activity on an island or micro-island implies the loss of its rights to the EEZ and continental shelf. This means that this governmental regulation may result in the weakening of the sovereign rights of our country in the islands and islets of the Eastern Aegean”.
“Nail” in Dendia
In yet another parliamentary briefing, Mr. Gerapetritis made sure to launch a careful but clear attack on his predecessor, Nikos Dendias. In particular, the foreign minister reportedly mentioned that the Cyprus issue was not even on the UN agenda before he took over the specific portfolio.
Good atmosphere, few absentees
According to the information, the debate was held in a good atmosphere, with only four of the 32 ND MPs participating in the Committee abstaining from the proceedings. Indicative was the comment of a “blue” member of parliament during the short break: “The climate is so good that the process is rather boring!”.
It is recalled that the three previous “parliamentary briefings” were held in sequence by Niki Kerameos, Adonis Georgiadis and Takis Theodorikakos without particular success in terms of attendance.
