Gunmen from a gang known as “Gran Griff” shot at least 70 people with automatic weapons as they swept through a Haitian city, a spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said. United for Refugees today, quoted by Reuters, said BTA.

“We are horrified by the bandit attacks yesterday in the town of Pont-Sond in the Haitian region of Artibonite,” said Samin al-Hitan.

At least 16 people were seriously injured in the attack, which happened in the early hours of yesterday, according to the United Nations. According to reports, the members of the group torched at least 45 houses and 34 vehicles and forced people to flee their homes.

“This terrible crime against defenseless women, men and children is not only an attack against the victims, but also against the entire Haitian people,” Prime Minister Gary Coney wrote on the X social network. “The security forces, with the support of our international partners, will step up their intervention (to deal with this problem),” he promised.

In an audio message posted on social media, the torturer Gran Griffo Luxon Elan, who was sanctioned by the United Nations last month, said that the responsibility for the attacks was with the state and the -victim, and he accused local residents of standing as “his soldiers”. They were killed by the police and volunteer units.

Local media reported yesterday that thousands of Pont-Sond residents had gone to the coastal town of Saint-Marc. Pont-Sonde is a major rice production center and is located in an area described as Haiti’s granary and located at an important crossroads between the capital Port-au-Prince and the northern parts of the Caribbean country, Reuters notes.
