Massachusetts Man Extradited to New York for Alleged Shooting in Debt Collection Scheme

Minliang Zheng50, a resident of Massachusetts, has been extradited to Queens, New York, in connection with an incident in which He is accused of shooting a woman to collect a money debt at the behest of his “boss.”

Prosecutors allege that Zheng was hired by a male relative of the victim to commit the crime. Previously, The accused would have threatened the victim’s 57-year-old sister and watched the house for weeks before carrying out the attack.

The incident occurred on March 19, when Zheng followed the woman to several locations and finally waited for her in front of her home in Flushing. The victim was shot in the leg but survived the attack.

Before shooting, Zheng is said to have told the woman: “The boss said to get the money”. He also allegedly threatened to harm his entire family if the male relative did not pay the debt. The exact circumstances of the debt have not been clarified.

Zheng fled to Massachusetts after the shooting and was arrested on August 8. Following his extradition to New York on November 2, he pleaded “not guilty” of assault and weapons charges. He remains detained without bail.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stressed that the defendant allegedly shot the victim simply to settle scores and that he will now be held accountable for his actions.

It is important to remember that all charges are merely accusations and that those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. This case is similar to another in which two men were sentenced in late October for hiring hitmen to murder another individual outside a karaoke bar in Queens in 2019, in the midst of a business dispute.
