At least 80 people have been kidnapped by armed men in the Nigerian state of Zamfara in the northwest of the country. There are also children among the abductees. The people were collecting wood when they were kidnapped.
Zamfara is a region where armed gangs regularly kidnap people for ransom.
There was also a kidnapping there last Friday. Police are not saying how many people were abducted. In the region, children are often kidnapped and taken to the camps of the gangs in the woods.
The kidnappers sometimes keep their victims in those camps for months. They demand money for the release, or demand that farmers pay them to use their land in exchange for ‘protection’.
The army often bombs gangs and combat groups in the jungle, but the kidnappings continue.
