It looks like Mass Effect 5 is still in pre-production, but developer BioWare says it will be a single-player game.
“We have a team working to figure out what the future holds for the new Mass Effect single player game,” says Gary McKay, CEO of BioWare.
EA’s historic push towards multiplayer and live service games has left players skeptical about the new installments of its studios’ beloved single-player franchises, even as the success of games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the promise of games like a remake of Dead Space talk about that there is room for singles. In any case, BioWare’s indication that the new Mass Effect will be “single-player” is clearly intentional.
McKay also said the studio is looking forward to “celebrating our community on N7 Day next month.” Day N7, of course, will take place on November 7th. Last year, BioWare released a teaser image of the new Mass Effect for N7 Day, and while we can definitely get a similar look for the game this year, you should probably keep your expectations modest, especially if the new game is “ideas” still in its infancy.
Last year, some insiders reported that development of the new Mass Effect would not begin “in full” until 2023, which is in line with BioWare’s formulation. It’s safe to assume that it will take a long time before we can get our hands on the next installment in the sci-fi RPG series.
