Mass Effect 2 Reigns Supreme as the Best Space Game in IGN’s Face-Off Competition

It’s still Space Week here at IGN, and today we’re proud to announce the winners of our Best Space Game Face-Off! After thousands upon thousands of 1v1 battles with encounters like No Man’s Sky vs. the all-new Starfield and Starcraft vs. Destiny 2, the ultimate space game has been chosen by you.

So which game took first place as the best space game and will forever be immortalized in the stars above? Drum please…

We’re IGN and Mass Effect 2 is your favorite space game in the Citadel! Yes, with an 89.3% win rate, Mass Effect 2 stood out from the rest with its incredible cast of characters, unforgettable suicide mission, and decisions carried over from the original and relevance.

We couldn’t agree more with this choice, as we ranked Mass Effect 2 as the sixth best game of all time and say, “As Commander Shepard, I traveled the galaxy on the best recruiting trip I could have hoped for.” One of the most heartbreaking Stories at all – but whether the game ends in tears or not is entirely up to you. When you go on a suicide mission, you will meet some of the best-written characters that feel authentic and have the power to evoke real emotion.”

In fact, all three Mass Effect games made it into the top five, with the original taking third place and Mass Effect 3 going straight to fourth despite its controversial ending. The number of still entertaining Mass Effect Andromeda games is down to 25, and we’re really hoping that the next Mass Effect will bring us back to the heights of the original trilogy.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which won the top prize on our list of the 10 best Star Wars video games, came in second place in this face-off game with a win rate of 84.8%. The sequel Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords took fifth place, while Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order took sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Newcomer Starfield takes eighth place and has shown its willingness to take on these all-time classics, even if its world isn’t fully explored yet.

The top ten was Star Wars: Battlefront II and No Man’s Sky, and it helped make up the top ten, which included five Star Wars games and three Mass Effect games.

On the other side of the galaxy, Team RymdResa came in last place with a win rate of 12.3%. Right behind RymdResa were Heat Signature, Duskers, Objects in Space, Avorian, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command, Starflight, Star Traders: Frontiers, Distant Worlds: Universe and Take On Mars.

Many of these games are either very old or smaller indie titles, and it’s important to note that their ranking shouldn’t necessarily say much about their quality, because we picked these space games because we think they’re worth splurging for battle! It’s very difficult when you have to face the giants of the most famous franchises.

Wondering where your favorite space video game like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron ended up? (She placed 16th!) For all the rankings, see the full list of rankings for all 92 Space Games that competed in this Face-Off.
