Mass Cremation of 87 Kuki-So Tribesmen in Manipur Riots Draws Thousands in Kolkata

Kolkata – The mass cremation of 87 Kuki-So tribesmen killed in the Manipur riots was held at Saken in Churachandpur. From the one-month-old baby Isaac to the elders and women, the tribe paid their last respects. Thousands of people came to the funerals in violation of the prohibition order in Churachandpupur. Sakane, where the cremation took place, will be known as the Martyr’s Memorial Centre. The funeral of 23 Kuki tribesmen killed in the riots was also held in Kangpokpi last week.

Most of those who were buried yesterday were killed in the early days of the Manipur riots that started 7 months ago. Among these are those who were killed while protecting the villages. The dead bodies, which had been lying in various mortuaries in Imphal for months, were brought to the tribal areas following the intervention of the Supreme Court. As the bodies could not be transported through the Imphal Valley, the Assam Rifles helicopters took the bodies to Churachandpur and another tribal area, Kangpopki.

Most of those killed are Christians. There are also some Jewish believers. More than 200 people were killed in the Manipur riots that started on May 3. More than half a million people became homeless. While the Kukis fled from the Imphal Valley, the Meitei fled from the Kuki tribal areas.
