Mask requirement in schools – and why Karin Prien deletes Twitter account

The Education Minister of Schleswig-Holstein and current President of the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) Karin Prien deactivated her Twitter account at the weekend after triggering a shitstorm with a post. Karin Prien (CDU) wrote on Twitter: “Please differentiate: children die. That is extremely tragic. But they die with COVID_19 and only extremely rarely because of COVID_19.”

Parents of previously ill children in particular felt offended by this statement and were extremely upset. For several days Karin Prien – also with the hashtag #prienruecktritt and insults against the minister – was in the German-speaking Twitter in the trending topics.

Prien had previously stated in an interview: “We have to get out of a culture of fear in the schools”. If things are relaxed from mid-February or early March, schools must also be relaxed and the obligation to wear masks slowly ended.

The President of the German Teachers’ Association, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, warned against lifting the restrictions too quickly. The number of infections should not be increased again by loosening the restrictions too early, thereby endangering the nationwide face-to-face teaching again.

The Minister of Education also received applause from opponents of the Corona rules for her tweet.

Among the mothers who were extremely upset by Karin Prien’s tweet was author Jasmina Kuhnke, who goes by @ebonyplusirony on Twitter.

The discussion continues – even if Karin Prien is no longer present on Twitter.
