A merchant from Hamburg-Winterhude had presented a fake health certificate so that he did not have to wear mouth and nose protection despite being required to wear a mask. The Hamburg district court sentenced him to a fine of 2,000 euros on Thursday.
He had received the certificate from a doctor in Austria. According to the former Viennese doctor, he sees himself as a “mixture of Francis of Assisi and Buddha”. The authorities in Austria have since withdrawn the doctor’s license. Most recently, he had sent a thousand false certificates all over the world, which were supposed to exempt their owners from the mask requirement. The same goes for the 51-year-old buyer from Winterhude. He denied before the local court that the certificate was false. He would have phoned the doctor in Austria last year before he issued the certificate. He had been recommended to him as a good doctor years before and he did not have a family doctor in Hamburg. According to the defendant, he is actually very healthy.
Judge: “Certificate ordered via contact form”
The judge didn’t believe him, however. “You simply ordered the certificate using the doctor’s contact form on the Internet,” he told the 51-year-old. “There was no investigation beforehand – not even on the phone.” The district court kept the certificate. The Austrian ex-doctor now lives in Tanzania.
