For several months now, Maserati has been enticing us to premiere its first electrified model, the plug-in hybrid Ghibli. In the end, however, it is only a mild-hybrid with a unique solution.

Behind the redesigned mask of the new Maserati Ghibli Hybrid is a 2.0-liter supercharged four-cylinder with 330 horsepower with a maximum torque of 450 Nm, which is combined with a 48-volt alternator and an electric compressor (e-Booster) powered by a battery stored at the rear. This is a unique solution in the world of mild hybrids.
The maximum output of 330 hp is available from 5,750 rpm, while the driver obtains 450 Nm of torque from 4,000 rpm. The Ghibli Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 255 km / h. The eight-speed automatic ZF takes care of the transfer of power to the rear wheels.

In addition to decent dynamics, the Ghibli Hybrid should also bring better economy and environmental friendliness. Combined consumption (according to WLTP) should be in the range of 8.5 to 9.6 l / 100 km, while emissions should be 192 – 216 g / km. However, the values do not have to be final, as homologation is still in progress. However, compared to a diesel V6, CO2 emissions should fall by up to 25%.
And why a mild hybrid? The reason should be the weight of the batteries of the plug-in hybrid drive unit, which even increased the curb weight too much. The Ghibli Hybrid is now even 80 kilograms lighter than the diesel V6 version. With an average curb weight of 1,950 kg, however, it is still not a light weight.

In order to underline the ecology of the model, the carmaker decided to make even minor modifications to the exterior. In addition to the above-mentioned modification of the radiator grille, for example, it painted the brake calipers blue, the three exhaust frames on the fenders and part of the trident logo on the rear pillar.
The interior is captivated by the new infotainment with Android Auto support, which has grown from 8.4 to 10.1 inches. In addition, a completely new fully digital instrument panel has settled in the instrument cluster, replacing analog alarm clocks. The newly introduced Maserati Connect program will then ensure regular software updates and vehicle inspections.

The new Ghibli Hybrid symbolizes the beginning of Maserati’s electrification, which should continue next year with the introduction of the new generation of GranTurismo and GranCabrio models with purely electric power units. In the meantime, however, there will be a presentation of the long-awaited supersport MC20.
