147-time Argentinian international Javier Mascherano has put an end to his football career. The 36-year-old defensive midfielder held a press conference on Sunday at Silver students, the club where he settled at the beginning of the year.
Mascherano is calling it quits after seventeen years of professional football, he has announced. “I have always lived one hundred percent for the sport and gave everything. But now it is time to stop: some personal matters have happened, I have thought about it for a long time, but this is the right decision,” said the Argentinian record international. “I would like to thank this club for the opportunity to end my career in Argentina.”
His greatest successes were Mascherano – who came over from Liverpool in 2010 and left for the Chinese Hebei China Fortune in 2018 – with FC Barcelona: in eight years he became the champion of Spain five times with the Catalans and he was twice with the Champions League in his hands. With Argentina he won gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Mascherano was part of the Argentinian selection during the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups: in 2014 the Argentines lost in the World Cup final against Germany.
