Masahiro Sakurai retired from game development after working on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ended three years ago, when they released the last DLC character, Sora from Kingdom Hearts. Since then he has been making YouTube videos.
However, he recently announced that his channel, Masahiro Sakurai on Game Creation (whose videos were published in Japanese and English), had ended. One of his latest videos is dedicated to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s beloved president who died in 2015 due to illness.
“It wouldn’t be right to end this channel without touching on this topic,” he says. Before becoming president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata was head of development at HAL Laboratory, and b It was Iwata who interviewed Sakurai when he joined the company, when he was only 19 years old.
Sakurai later created the famous character Kirby as well as the fighting game Super Smash Bros. This was also one of the few games where Iwata, who was a programmer before being appointed as the director of HAL and later Nintendo, was directly involved in the coding.
“Mr. Iwata was really the person who understood me best,” Sakurai says in the video.
