Mary Weiss, Lead Singer of The Shangri-Las, Dies at 75: A Look Back at Her Iconic Career

Mary Weiss of popular girl pop group The Shangri-Las has died at the age of 75. It experienced its greatest fame in the 1960s. Weiss was its lead singer.

Another sad news hit the music world. American singer Mary Weiss, a member of the popular girl group The Shangri-Las, has died. Weiss was 75 years old.

“Mary was an icon, a hero for the young men and women of my generation, but also those after,” he quotes The Guardian Miriam Linn of Norton Records.

The American girl band rose to fame in the 1960s with a series of hits about teenage love and tragedy. Their hits Remember (Walking in the Sand) and Leader of the Pack were famous, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Known as the tough girls of the 1960s pop scene, the band consisted of two sets of sisters, Mary and Elizabeth Weiss and twins Marguerite and Mary Ann Ganser from the New York borough of Queens. But after a number of hits, the group split up in 1964.

Mary Weiss retired from the music business for many years. She only returned in 2007, when she released her first solo album with Norton Records.
