At the age of 93, the world-famous fashion designer Mary Quantová, who is known above all as the “mother of the miniskirt”, died. She was one of the most influential figures in the fashion scene of the 1960s. She died peacefully at her home in the UK, according to her family.

Mary Quant was one of the world’s most recognized fashion designers of the 20th century. A trained milliner, she started making her own clothes right after school and opened a boutique in London’s Chelsea district in 1955. She influenced fashion trends especially in the 60s, when she was also instrumental in making fashion accessible to the masses.
She focused primarily on the development of a style called modism. Elegance, smoothness and vivid colors were typical for her designs. Probably the most famous pieces of her collections were the mini skirts. Quant is thus often considered the founder of this style.
She started calling them miniskirts after her favorite car brand, Mini. “It was the girls from King’s Road who invented the miniskirt. I made clothes that allowed you to run and dance. We made them in the length that customers wanted. I wore short skirts and customers said: ‘shorter, shorter’,” the website recalled BBC interview with Mary from 2014.
There has long been controversy over whether Quant actually “invented” the miniskirt. However, its contribution to the popularization of this piece of clothing is unquestionable. The designer loved geometric patterns, polka dots, color contrasts and presented her models in extravagant window displays that attracted the attention of British and foreign photographers.
