Mary Kay Inc. has announced a new partnership with Dr. Jack Gilbert, professor of pediatrics at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and professor of microbial oceanography at UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “Understanding how our normal aging process influences the microbiota of the skin can provide amazing new insights that will shape the future of cosmetic product design,” said Dr. Lucy Gildea, Chief Innovation Officer, at the Products and Science Division, Mary Kay Inc. “We are thrilled to partner with Dr. Gilbert to better understand the impact of the microbiome on overall skin health. »

In 2022, Dr. Gilbert became co-director of the Microbiome and Metagenomics Center at UC San Diego. This center is part of the National Institutes of Health’s $175 million Nutrition for Precision Health program. Using Dr. Gilbert’s expert skills, Mary Kay scientists hope to be able to study the extent to which different skin attributes are associated with microbial changes in women. “There is a lack of knowledge in this area,” added Dr. Gildea. “We hope to fill it. »

Previous research has concluded that human skin has its own complex ecosystem of bacteria and other microorganisms that serve as its healthy foundation. Similar to what was found in the gut, human skin, the body’s largest organ, needs these bacteria to function optimally. These bacterial communities also retain a unique signature depending on location, age, sex, and interaction with the environment. Very little is known about the exact factors that contribute to the particularly variable bacterial communities of the skin, and their impact on the aging process.

The partnership with Dr. Gilbert is just the latest example of Mary Kay’s efforts to reinforce the brand’s long-standing commitment to advancing healthcare research and development. skin. Mary Kay’s global portfolio includes more than 1,600 patents for products, technologies and packaging designs.
