Marvel’s 33rd Film: The Marvels – A Critic’s Review

Superhero movies have returned to movie theaters with the premiere of “The Marvels“, the 33rd film in the Cinematographic Universe of Marvel (MCU, for its acronym in English). This film directed by Nia DaCosta stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Years after taking revenge on the Kree and the evil Supreme Intelligence, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), aka the Captain Marvel, traverses an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary named Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). This incident causes Danvers’ powers to connect with those of Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), also known as Ms. Marveland with those of his estranged niece, Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), now an agent for the SABER agency alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta is best known for directing and writing the film “Little Woods” (2018) and “Candyman” (2021), a direct sequel to the classic 1992 horror film of the same name. In addition to directing “The Marvels“, DaCosta also wrote the script with Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. This team had the difficult job of creating a script that would serve as a sequel to “Captain Marvel” (2019) and also continue the plot of the series Disney+ “Ms. Marvel” and “WandaVision.”

On a technical level, “The Marvels“It has an acceptable job in terms of details such as editing, costumes, soundtrack and so on, but in terms of its visual effects and action sequences, the quality varies between “very good” and “that looks fake.” For one On the other hand, there are scenes in which the visual effects are very well done and look great on the big screen, but in others they seem like they were made for a television series from the 90s. On the other hand, during the course Several action sequences emerge from the film with very dynamic and entertaining choreography, but sometimes they are not very well done.

Despite having to deal with characters and other elements of the entire MCU and two series, the story itself is fine, it takes its time to develop the relationship between its main characters and tell a fun space adventure without losing its coherence. The problem is that, despite having all the elements of an epic film, such as a villain who threatens all of reality and catastrophic events, it doesn’t feel like an epic film. These catastrophic events and their consequences do not develop as they should and some conflicts are resolved in a very simple way. Even so, the script does have some very creative and entertaining details, such as the presence of scenes that seem to have emerged from an episode of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s or from a musical comedy from Disney.

The film spends more time developing Brie Larson’s character and she does a good job, but she lacks emotional strength and the same goes for Teyonah Parris. On the other hand, Iman Vellani’s enthusiasm and energy is notable every time she is on screen, although she still needs to develop more as an actress. Even so, there is a pleasant chemistry between the three main actresses and their scenes together are entertaining. Overall, the performances of the rest of the cast of “The Marvels” are acceptable, but there is nothing exceptional. Some of the most comical scenes in the film feature the presence of Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur and Saagar Shaikh, actors who reprise their characters from the series “Ms. Marvel“.

By the way, this film only has one additional scene that appears in the middle of the credits and it is something worth watching because it contains some surprises.

The Marvels“It is definitely not one of the best installments of the MCU, but it’s not one of the worst either. It is a film that can function as simple entertainment and an excuse to go to the movies and forget about the stress of everyday life.
