Marvel introduced the first Galactus and he is as terrifying as the “Eater of the Worlds” we know

Warning: this note includes spoilers for Defenders # 4

Galactus is one of the most feared villains in the world of Marvel Comics ー and there are dozens of fearsome villains ー and now, the publisher has just revealed the great antagonist who served as the archetype and predecessor of the “Eater of Worlds” that we know today. Known as Primal Galactus, this version of the character is as terrifying, or more, than the original Galactus.

This information appeared in Defenders # 4, where the super team of heroes gathered to stop Carlo Zota, who originally appeared in Marvel Comics # 1 from 1939. This villain has dedicated himself to traveling back in time and this led to the paladins to know different eras of the Marvel universe, meeting heroes and villains that we do not normally see. For example, they encountered Galactus’ mother, Taaia, while confronting the Omnimax, known to be Marvel’s first “world-eater” and the only survivor from the pre-Big Bang universe.

They were also in the Fifth Cosmos, which is a realm made of pure magic and in this issue, Defenders # 4, they reached the Fourth Cosmos, a place characterized by presenting various archetypes of heroes and villains present in the future of the Marvel universe, ” the home of the Archetypes of Good and Evil, “primordial entities of pure myth destined to echo in every reality to come.

Among these beings are, for example, One-is-Four, similar to the Hulk. But who interests us now is the original Eater of Worlds, a being that tenses reality at every step it takes and is controlled by Zota, (who by the way, traveled back in time). In an attempt to defeat him, the Defenders team up with the archetypal heroes of the Fourth Cosmos.

After Primal Galactus is defeated, it transforms from “What must be” to “What can be”, which would indicate that the Fourth Cosmos must reach its end, but that the archetypes can be saved. The previous “Galactus” summons the Pilgrim, who helps the Defenders go to the Third Cosmos to stop Zota, telling the team that he would lead the archetypes on a “search to the heart of creation.”

The number ends with the heroes in the Third Cosmos meeting a huge golden being wielding a sword. The current series will end with Defenders # 5 which goes on sale this January.

The Primal Galactus from the Fourth Cosmos that appeared in Defenders # 4 is very similar to the one from the Eighth Cosmos, which is basically our Galactus. This first “Eater of Worlds” shows that the cosmic villain has been present in all stages of the Marvel Universe, playing a different role in each iteration and is always confirmed as a balancing force in this existence.
