The studio was accused of whitewashing, a phenomenon where colored actors are replaced by white players. At the time, that decision was interpreted as a way to avoid clichés and bad stereotypes.

But Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige now admits it was a bad choice. “We thought we were so smart and so groundbreaking,” he says in Men’s Health. “We didn’t want to do the cliché of the wise, old Asian man. But it was a wake-up call for us,” Wait a minute. “Is there any other way to fix that? Is there any other way to avoid cliches and still hire an Asian actor?” And the answer to that is of course ‘yes’ ”, says Feige.

Marvel will soon release the movie ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, the first superhero movie with an Asian main character. Shang-Chi is a martial artist who was trained as an assassin by the terrorist organization The Ten Rings, but escapes to live a normal life in San Francisco.
