Marvel Avengers require internet connection to start single player campaign

As the revised publication date for Marvel’s Avengers inch closer and closer, Crystal Dynamics, eager to create hype before September, has finally decided to be more liberal with its sharing of new details for the adventure of superheroes. While the developer will certainly have some secrets for its launch, the release of War Table last week made a number of interesting revelations, including confirmation of the game’s main antagonist.

Aside from additional stories, brand new bonking robot gameplay Thor on the head with his trusty Mjolnir completed the rest of what Crystal was to show, but certainly not to share.

The recently updated product pages for Marvel’s Avengers on Sony’s PlayStation Store pointed to a strange stipulation that buyers – especially those who don’t have an easily accessible Internet – will want to take note. The clause reads as follows:

Single online access required for single player campaign online access required for multiplayer and to download post-launch content. Free account for Square Enix members required. Platform-specific online subscription fees may be required.

Why it is exactly that players need an Internet connection to start a strictly solo campaign is not immediately clear, although this may well be related to the requirement to have a Square Enix account. The single barrier to entry could simply be the publisher’s method of verifying accounts before they are released into the game, but again, why this would even be necessary, to begin with, will require clarification of the leaves from Square. Either way, we don’t imagine it will turn out to be too problematic for most, but a quirk deserves to be highlighted, nonetheless.

Marvel’s Avengers releases September 4 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Stadia. Square confirmed last week that those who purchase the game on either console can upgrade to the Xbox Series X and PS5 versions for free as they become available.
