Martinican rapper Meryl appears in the streets of New York

The music platform Spotify chooses the Martinican rapper Meryl to promote gender equity in music. Meryl is also the 1st cover artist in the platform’s international program to identify and support emerging artists.

Spotify launches “Equal”, an international program designed to promote gender equity in music.

His photo is currently displayed in the streets of famous Times Square in New York. Meryl is in the spotlight, alongside other talented artists such as Clara Luciani or Hoshi.

Martinique singer, songwriter, rapper and toplineuse, Meryl, also supported by Spotify as part of its international program to identify and support emerging artists, “Radar”, is the first artist to feature on the cover of the local playlist.

A global playlist and local playlists of female artists are available on the platform, and creators will be featured on Spotify’s homepage and social media.

To implement this unprecedented device, Spotify unveils local playlists, also global, with artists from the international scene. These include Saweetie (US), Duda Beat (BR), Griff (UK), Natalia Lafourcade (MX) and Zoe Wees (DE / UK).

Today, only 1 in 5 artists on the top charts is a woman.

The same is true for all music professions: for a woman, we find 38 male music producers, and only 12.6% of songwriters are women.

An under-representation that contrasts sharply with the key role that women play in the success of Spotify today and in the music industry as a whole.

With its Equal program, Spotify is committed to taking long-term action to give more resources and opportunities to female artists and designers (authors, composers, performers, producers, etc.).
