The most laureate family in Brazil’s Olympic history increased its collection this Monday. Martine Grael, who competes alongside Kahena Kunze, took the gold medal in Tokyo, the second podium of her career, as she had been champion at Rio 2016. Thus, the Grael family reached nine achievements, five by Torben and others two from Lars.

Torben Grael is, along with fellow sailor Robert Scheidt, the athlete with the most medals in Brazilian history, with five. Torben was silver in the Soling class in Los Angeles 1984, then bronze in the Star class in 1988, alongside Nelson Falcão. After not doing well in Barcelona 1992, he hit three podiums in a row in the Star class alongside Marcelo Ferreira: gold in Atlanta 1996, bronze in Sydney 2000 and gold in Athens 2004.

Lars Grael, brother of Torben, and consequently uncle of Martine, has two Olympic medals in his career, both bronze in the Tornado class. In 1988, at the Seoul Games, alongside Clínio de Freitas, and in 1996, alongside Kiko Pelicano. Kiko, by the way, isn’t exactly a Grael, but Lars’s brother-in-law.

The Grael family transcends sailing and is one of the most victorious in world sport. Although not the patriarch, Torben Grael is the main clan name. He saw his uncles Axel and Erik go to the Olympics in the 1960s as athletes, then it was coordinated by Erik himself at the 1984 Olympics. Years later, he was with his brother Lars in three Olympics as an athlete.
