Martin Zaťovič Leads Kometa to Fifth Straight Win and Gears Up for Top Four Battle

In January, Comet enjoys the home environment to its heart’s content. In addition, she can handle home matches, and with Liberec she recorded her fifth win in a row. They were not the better team this time, but in the 46th minute, captain Martin Zaťovič overturned the momentum with a converted escape.

Kometa dominated in the first period, but managed to score a single goal from the pressure. The White Tigers then seemed to let out a different shift in the second period – suddenly they had both the game and the shooting advantage.

“We made the match difficult for ourselves. We had a great first period, the second period was crazy. The goalkeeper kept us there and thanks to him we were able to win the match. It was down to him to keep us in the game. We then scored goals and won the match,” he assessed

Two things were crucial – another, the incredible performance of the eighteen-year-old goalkeeper

Jan Kavan

“In the second period, they completely took us out of the game, there we were just waiting to see what they would do to us, that put blood in their veins. Then we said to ourselves that we have to break it. It was basically a playoff game, and games like that will come. We have to win them, especially when we play at home,” reflected the captain of the Comets. “We know we have the power, and now Káves has also started to catch well,” he added.

Zaťovič prepared well for the season. After the last one, when he caught criticism from all sides, at the age of almost thirty-nine, he rose back among the leaders. And the place in the first line is not for merit, but for excellent form. In an important escape, he also showed that his self-confidence had returned with a slick backhand bluff.

“Backhand is not my classic, but I had speed, so I think I did it pretty well for a long time. The goalkeeper didn’t get there, so good,” he described his game changer.

During the December crisis, it seemed that the Brno juggernaut was out of the fight for the top four. But now the situation is getting complicated, the fourth Verva for a long time is also not in ideal form. The fifth Liberec Kometa beat, so from the sixth place it has a pretty clear path upwards.

“We have to appreciate that we have this streak now and continue to score points every game.”

“We have risen, we are catching up to them. For me, four is a goal I would like to achieve. But the league is terribly balanced. We have to appreciate the fact that we now have such a streak and continue to score points in every match,” revealed Zaťovič’s ambition. “It doesn’t matter if it’s two, three or one point. Let’s have some face until the end of the season,” he continued.

The next test awaits Kometa already on Tuesday in Třinec, which may be another test that will tell if he really belongs in the top four.

“It’s great, we’re still playing now. When you win, the cabin is also fresh, nobody is tired. On Monday we will have a light training session and move on. “Třinec is a tough opponent, we play away, we have to play defensively, help the goalkeeper and bring points,” plans Zaťovič.

Will Furch catch in Třinec, or Kavan the phantom again?

And which goalkeeper will the players help? Dominik Furch was already able to catch on Sunday, an injury recently allowed him to train and he should have received the green light for matches. But why risk it when you can call Kavan, who is catching like after ten seasons in the extra league – nothing falls out of him, he is completely calm, he greets the fans after every intervention.

“Today, the young people have a completely different mind, so he is completely fine. Let’s be happy that he is doing well now, it hits him and he is happy. He has no emotions, and on top of that, he’s a goalkeeper. I took it more seriously when I was young, he doesn’t even know the next day that he had a match – the perfect head for a hockey player,” concludes the traditionally joking Zaťovič.
