In the 13th “Bruno” book “French Roulette”, too, Martin Walker wrote a crime story that is deeply rooted in the region east of Bordeaux. The old sheep farmer Driant recently died.
Shortly before his death, the old man had sold his farm to an insurance company that was supposed to guarantee him a pleasant retirement age in a senior citizens’ residence. Before he could even move in there, Driant had died of a heart attack.
He hadn’t told his children about his plans. As the “first and only policeman” in town, Bruno has to deal with all complaints, including the fact that the animals on the abandoned farm were not looked after. So he sets out to blame the insurance company for neglecting the animals.
In doing so, he comes across a strange company structure. Bruno’s interest is more in the news that the former rock star Rod is returning to England with his family and therefore wants to sell the little castle he has previously lived in.
The musician’s son brings his girlfriend with him, and she seems to be related to the oligarch who owns the senior citizens’ residence … As always with Walker, this book is not a classic crime thriller, but rather a social novel about life in the south of France, in the course of which it was also a case is resolved.
