Despite the fact that football player Martin Škrtel is one of the most famous athletes in Slovakia, the way he lives was unknown to many. More than public appearances, he focused on what was personally important to him – his football career and family. This was also the reason why he rarely commented on his personal life. And finally, also to the career.
During his life, the native of Handlova achieved what many only dream of. More than 20 years of an active football career brought him many “unattainable” triumphs, including the captaincy of Liverpool. However, the beginnings, especially in this club, were not easy. He joined the English football team at the age of 23 after several successful seasons with FK Zenit St. Petersburg. However, at that time he did not yet master English and, as he himself admitted in several interviews, settling in the UK took longer than others would have expected. However, one person in particular helped him significantly later on. His partner Barbora.

First great love
Even though Škrtel was a star, it was not reflected in his performance. Inside, despite his talent and success, he was still the same as before, with his good and less good qualities. Few would have guessed that the football player is actually shy – and that also made it difficult for him to get to know his partner. He registered Barbora from Trenčín, where she comes from, but he didn’t know how to address her. In addition, there was an age difference between them. While Škrtel was 22 years old, Barbora was only 16.

“I was shy, shy. There were modern dating sites then, I logged in there (editor’s note, from the English term log in). The way it worked was that when you viewed a photo, it would show the owner of that photo. So I kept clicking on it to show it to her and to make her aware of it.” revealed Martin on Petr Marcin’s show Late in the evening, where he also admitted that their mutual friend Filip Šebo helped him contact Barbora.
“Then I started by asking if she remembers me – and she, “Skade. So I wrote that four years ago we met in a bar in Trenčín,” recalled Škrtel, adding that this attempt did not work out for him. At that time, Barbora was only 12 years old, so it was clear that they had not met. “She narrowed her eyes and gave me a chance. We agreed on a date, but I didn’t ask for the phone number – that’s the shyness,” the athlete continued, but the date never happened. Barbora did not go to the city, as she had written to him before, but despite his efforts, he searched for her for many hours. Finally, however, he gathered all the pieces of courage he had and the next day he asked for the phone number. “She rejected me from the beginning, she didn’t want to have anything to do with football players. I am glad that I convinced her that I am different,” he added.

Model marriage
And it seems that Škrtel is really different. He first laid eyes on Barbora 16 years ago, and to this day he has eyes only for her. The couple got married in 2012, when they had been together for almost six years. During that time, Martin and Barbora moved from St. Petersburg to Liverpool – and their son Matteo was born.
Although the footballer publishes pictures of his private life rather rarely, they are mostly confessions to his son and his significant other. Whether for Valentine’s Day, birthday, Mother’s Day or wedding anniversary. Škrtel even had the date of the ceremony tattooed on his calf, as well as the names of his wife and son.
