The victory of Slovan Bratislava football players (2:1) in the opening match of the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League on the Ferencváros turf is great news, and nothing changes the fact that the “Whites” still have a very difficult rematch ahead of them.
It is necessary to appreciate not only the result, but also the way in which our master achieved it. A very good job was done by the implementation team led by head coach Vladimír Weiss Sr., who prepared the team brilliantly tactically. Offensively, the Whites played in a 3-4-3 formation, but defensively, it was very important what roles were given to wing players Lukáš Pauschek and Jurij Medvedev.
Both of them moved in very well and thus crowded out the space on the edges of the field. Slovan defended carefully with five and sometimes even six players in the line. Ferencváros is especially strong in the wing areas, but now the footballers of the Hungarian champion had a hard time establishing themselves on the sides.
The key, of course, was not only the determination of the tactical plan, but also how the players approached its implementation. Ferencváros created some chances, but goalkeeper Adrián Chovan held the team back. However, Slovan succeeded in Budapest not only thanks to attentive defense and excellent organization of the game. The behavior of the players after winning the ball was also important. They showed confidence and courage. Although they played under a lot of pressure in some passages of the match, they did not proceed to kick the balls. They did not succumb to the stormy atmosphere, they showed a cool head.
They came up with football solutions from the deep block and pressing of the opponent, they presented themselves with quality when playing with the ball on their boots. If they got into a game situation where they found themselves outnumbered, they artfully asked for a foul. In this regard, I would like to highlight the performance of Juraj Kucka, who showed both quality and experience.
The Slavs played until the end. Although they conceded first and the stadium was in euphoria, they did not give up and scored two nice goals. Ferencváros had more of the ball at their feet, looked visually dominant, but was not as dangerous as expected. Our champion achieved a great result in the rematch and the coach has no reason to change his tactical plan for the match in Bratislava.
This one worked perfectly. The players performed their tasks in an exemplary manner, there was not a single weak performance on the field. If we compare it with the matches with Dinamo Batumi, the progress was really very big. The correct decision was that coach Vladimír Weiss st. let the supports rest in the league duel in Podbrezova. Cup Europe is a priority and the loss from Horehronio (1:2) can still be made up.
Summa summarum, trainer Vladimír Weiss senior. tactically surpassed his counterpart Stanislav Čerčesov, who was unable to react to the performance of the “Whites” even during the match. The home team kept playing their own game, which did not bring fruit to Ferencváros. At the end of the day, therefore, the quality and courage of the guests were heard.
The implementation team of our champion should also be praised for the preparation of standard situations and substitutions. The first goal resulted from a rehearsed signal, which was well executed by assistant De Marco and the author of a precise strike by Kašia. For the second goal, the joker Čakvetadze did an excellent job again, bypassing the player and thanks to that he had more space for Barsejjan to finish.
Of course, Slovan’s victory is the result not only of a successful immediate preparation for the match, but also of good decisions in the summer. It was right that the club found a common ground with coach Vladimír Weiss st. regarding contract extension.
He once again confirmed his qualities. The management also helped him with the arrival of new reinforcements. Kucka, Čakvetadze and Ramirez are players who not only expanded the squad, but especially the first two were already able to significantly help the team in the short term in the European Cup. Engaging these footballers expanded the possibilities of the implementation team. The coaches today have players on the bench capable of deciding the match.
Of course, we still have to wait for the definitive one. However, the pressure is on the side of Ferencváros and the Slovan has the power to use it perfectly.
