The film New York, New York begins with the surrender of the Japanese in World War II. The singer Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli) and the saxophonist Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro) get to know each other at a lively victory celebration and after a short time also love each other. Both were active in the war, now they are looking for new jobs. They end up in a band together, but soon develop apart professionally. They quickly discover that this also has far-reaching consequences for their relationship.
Martin Scorsese’s New York, New York followed his huge success Taxi Driver and was to be a major change for him. After he had previously banned realism on celluloid, he wanted to shoot a kind of homage to musical films of old Hollywood with New York, New York. Liza Minelli (Arrested Development, Adventure on the Lucky Lady ) finally hoped for a success with the film after several flops. Even though the drama was enthusiastically received by critics and even nominated for four Golden Globes, it turned out to be a flop at the box office. Completely wrong, as moviepilot Mikkean also thinks:
Scorsese dares almost the impossible. The marriage of classic craftsmanship, glamor and the sobriety of the real. […] The magic of the old days, when light-heartedness was danced and sung about in a relaxed and joyful way, Martin Scorsese perfectly imitates and feels. That is to say, he brings this magic to life, but not as a blind disciple.
