The filmmaker Martin Scorsese He attended a meeting with director Rodrigo Cortés at the Film Academy in Madrid in which he said that when he went “to see the graves of the Osage murders” with his family, “guilt” hit him, and he assured that his intention with ‘The Assassins of the Moon’ was not to make “just entertainment.” Scorsese will produce Cortés’ next film ‘Escape’, which stars Mario Casas.
“After all the trauma that everyone went through, it became entertainment (the Osage murders case). Everyone went on with their lives and I thought ‘is this movie just entertainment?’ Because if so, it’s my fault. That’s why I did the obituary, and went to the Osage family graves with my wife, daughters and granddaughters, that hit me, I didn’t think it would be so emotional. I realized that maybe I am guilty too and maybe this movie was my way of asking for forgivenessthe guilt was interesting, we all felt it while we were filming,” Scorsese explained.
Furthermore, regarding ‘The Assassins of the Moon’, the director explained to Cortés that it is “a love story”, it is not just about “murderers and victims“and he has confessed that this was made known to him by Margie Burkhart, the granddaughter of the late Mollie Burkhart, belonging to the Osage nation, in Oklahoma (United States).
During the talk, which Queen Letizia attended by surprise, Scorsese made reference to Pedro Almodóvar, praising the aesthetics that the Spanish director uses in the title labels at the beginning of his films, which he described as “simply beautiful.” while, laughing, he has criticized films in which there are “too many logos” or opening credits. “Remove the logos, don’t be distracting, and just start the movie already!” the director joked.
In that sense, the director has assured that although he “misses old Hollywood” in which the viewer was prepared before seeing the film with credits and the “incredible” sound, he considers that those times “have already passed” and the Cinema is “a different world.”
In this sense, the director has stressed that “we must reinvent the image” and not “imitate.” In any case, he has pointed out that he “no longer needs to prove that he can do pyrotechnics.”
“I don’t have to prove anything to myself, now I’m just going to get the truth, what else do I have left? I have to find myself. Could I express myself without bombastic things?” the director reflected.
Thus, Scorsese has also spoken about his evolution when making films, and has explained that “when he was 20 years old” he was “fascinated” with the superimposition of images and Soviet montage, but although it was difficult for him, he finally understood “the power of a direct cut”.
“There is a special nature to the power of these cuts, I think. And that leads me to think about certain cuts in Stanley Kubrick’s films, particularly ‘Lolita’ and ‘The Shining’. The impact of the cuts, when you suddenly saw the person’s face, and you realized what a powerful impact that has. And I realized that this eliminated many excesses that were not necessary,” the director reflected.
For his part, Cortés has highlighted how Scorsese often “models” and “shapes” the performances in the editing after filming, while Scorsese has joked that he “does not always” get the cast he wants. “There have been times when no one has picked up the phone,” he said, laughing.
“For example, in ‘Taxi Driver,’ Robert De Niro and I trusted each other a lot. He trusted me to shape the performance and I trusted him to let him do it. Sometimes he would tell me that he had a slightly crazy idea, and I would ask him not to tell me about it, that he would just do it. When he made it, while we were recording, he asked me if it was too much, and I told him no, that I loved it.“Scorsese recalled about improvisation during filming.
The director has claimed that both director and actors “should enjoy working together” and “have fun”, not “cut them off.”
“I let them do things I’m not going to use, or so I think.. Sometimes I have said on set that we would never use a take and then in editing we have used it. “They (the actors) can jump, run, do whatever they want because I know that if I can get the tone and the right angle, I can get the scene,” he concluded.
