Scorsese told the Los Angeles Times that he is preparing to shoot the film in 2024, “after he was inspired to start working on it by a meeting with Pope Francis in 2023.”

The octogenarian director added, “I responded to the Pope’s call to artists in the only way I knew how, by imagining and writing a script for a film about Christ.”

According to his statements, his film aims to defend Christianity against attempts to distort it.
