What an evening on the Rhöndorfer Ziepchensplatz!
At the King Georg Open Air in Rhöndorf last Friday (August 11th), one of Europe’s leading jazz pianists could be seen at the penultimate concert of 2023 from the “Music in the Pavilion” series: Martin Sasse!
The citizens and local people of Rhöndorf took the opportunity for this concert and together with the piano maker Andre Wedel, a Steinway grand piano costing around 120,000 euros and weighing around 400 kg was brought to the Rhöndorf pavilion in the afternoon.
Due to the good weather, a large number of visitors had already gathered on Ziepchenplatz about 1.5 hours before the start of the concert in order to secure the best seats. For the first time, the new area in front of the pavilion could also be seated.
In the course of the evening, the Ziepchenplatz filled up and around 400 visitors came to listen to the sounds of the trio, who entertained the audience with different jazz styles.
The trio has existed in changing line-ups for over 25 years. Martin Sasse regularly plays in concerts and recordings with international jazz greats such as Peter Bernstein, Vincent Herring, Steve Grossmann and Harry Allen. He was a companion of Bobby McFerrin, Billy Cobham and Jan Akkerman. His album “Good Times” with Charlie Mariano was awarded the German Record Critics’ Quarterly Prize in 2010. Martin Sasse has been the artistic director of the Cologne jazz club King Georg since 2019.
With glorious summer evening weather, the evening flew by and the Sasse fans, who had also traveled from further afield, got their money’s worth.
The team around Peter Profittlich took care of the physical well-being with cool drinks and the Rhöndorfer Ladies’ Committee with delicacies from the grill.
According to the motto “Many hands, quick end” … the Steinway grand piano was packed again shortly after the concert and disappeared safely in the transport vehicle.
