“During the preparations I was immediately completely involved: rehearsals, lectures and camera tests,” says Martijn about the run-up to the recordings. “I gained a few kilos, not because Willem-Alexander was so fat in 1999, the year in which the series takes place, I thought I was a bit too thin.”
In order to interpret the king as well as possible and because he is ‘a lot bigger’ than the actor, Martijn decides that those extra pounds are welcome. “Maybe I’ll get a little closer to him this way.”
Martijn hopes that there will be recognition for the end product, but he gets the greatest satisfaction ‘from the freedom to completely shape a role to his will’. “To change something at the last minute, to play a scene slightly differently, that kind of thing.”
Exactly how much the actor gained weight for the role is unclear. But that he chose this himself, is certain. “I dare to take that freedom, yes,” he clarifies. “It’s a sum of clothes and makeup, but how I feel, how I feel about myself is just as important.”
Máxima herself is in any case not planning to watch the series.
