One of the main faces of Czech Television was announcer Marta Skarlandtová for thirty years. She has always impressed viewers with her elegance and her incredible ability to naturally switch from Czech to German or English during live broadcasts. How has she changed over time and what does she do today?
At one time, it was said that she was a better announcer than the legendary Saskia Burešová. Perhaps that is also why the two ladies have not exactly been in love twice in the past. Skarlandtová, unlike Burešová, has already finished moderating and devotes herself to a completely different profession, namely translation. And he is among the best in that too.
Audition instead of boxing
Marta Skarlandtová was born on February 12, 1948 in Hranice. Her father was an international boxing referee and Marta was his big fan. When they once went to Ostrava by train to box, a moment came that changed her life. She saw a poster where it was written that there was an audition for an announcer at the Ostrava TV studio on Press Day in Černá luka. Skarlandt was so interested that she said goodbye to her father and went to see the audition. And even though she didn’t expect it, it ended up being her ticket to being a TV announcer.
An extraordinary talent for languages
At first, Skarlandtová worked externally for Czech Television, but in 1969 her first employment contract was already on her desk. But it was also a bit of a complication for her. At that time, she was still a student in her last year of university. But in the end, she got an exemption from the Ministry of Education, so she could go to school during the day and report in the evening. It soon became clear that Marta is well equipped with languages, and they started using her on TV for translations from German and English.

Friends or girlfriends?
Skarlandtová was a TV announcer together with the current presenter of the program Kalendárium Saski Burešová. According to various stories, Skarlandt was supposed to wage a silent war with her. Burešová was always a lady and people liked her, but Skarlandtová easily surpassed her, mainly thanks to her language skills. Many female announcers still meet and reminisce about the old days. But Skarlandtová is not among them.
She started translating
As soon as the Sunday Morning program ended on Czech Television, Marta Skarlandtová stopped appearing on the screens. But as they say – when something ends, something new begins. Marta threw herself into the translation career and it even brought her together with her brother Milan Hein. Skarlandtová translated plays for his Ungelt Theater in Prague and also wrote lyrics for her husband Zdenek Skarlandt’s band – Campfire Friends.
He avoids the media
The former excellent broadcaster likes her peace and gives interviews sporadically. In 2016, however, she appeared in the show Na plovarné, because Marek Eben persuaded her to do so. And that’s when, unfortunately, it became clear what a negative effect a big vice has on her voice, which she hasn’t been able to get rid of for years – smoking. Her voice is rougher than it used to be, and if you played it without the image, you probably wouldn’t even know it belonged to Marta Skarlandt.
A husband’s message from the grave
The love of the former announcer’s life was Zdeněk Skarlandt, the guitarist of the country group Kamarádi campfires. The happy marriage was divided by his death in 2019. The funeral was rather unconventional. Skarlandt prepared his own parte himself and also planned the place – the Great Hall of the Strašnické Crematorium. “I didn’t even wait for my birthday, you know I hate jubilees” it was on the invitation, which also included a sarcastic sentence “So I Died to You”.
Grandmother twice
The former TV announcer has a daughter Linda with her husband. Thanks to her, Marta is today a two-time grandmother, her granddaughter Laura and grandson Sam make her happy. She can be rightfully proud of her daughter, as she is engaged in meritorious work. She is a social worker in the palliative care department at the Faculty Thomayer Hospital in Prague and is also the head of communication and awareness programs at the Center for Palliative Care.
In addition, she inherited her mother’s natural beauty and femininity. Marta Skarlandtová really wanted more children, but unfortunately after the birth of Linda she found out that it was no longer possible. But their family sticks together even more. “When I see the relationship Linda has with her children, I believe that when she loses her strength, she will draw energy from them, just as Milan and I drew it from each other.” says Skarlandt.
