Marseilles. Italy’s Marta Maggetti took gold in the women’s windsurfing final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Saturday, after coming back in the final stages of the event with an intelligent strategy.
Maggetti raised his fist as he crossed the finish line and jumped off his board into the Mediterranean Sea to celebrate.
The Italian’s escape from her rivals in the third of the four stages proved decisive and gave her the lead over Britain’s Emma Wilson, who had dominated the first part of the race.
Israeli Sharon Kantor, second for most of the fast chase between the three windsurfers around the Bay of Marseille, took silver.
Wilson, who had dominated the fleet during the qualifying stages, crossed the finish line well behind her rivals and took third place. The Briton, who also won bronze at Tokyo 2020, looked dismayed.
In the men’s windsurfing competition, Israel’s Tom Reuveny won the gold medal after beating Australia’s Gae Morris (silver) and Netherlands’ Luuc van Opzeeland (bronze).
