Marta Kubišová: Singing, Sheltering Cats, and Memories of August 1968

“I’m at my absolute best around four in the morning, when the temperature finally drops to at least twenty,” admitted Aha! Marta, who is very lucky that her female Yorkshire terrier Brillink is not demanding, so walking twice a day is enough for her. “The weather is really terrible this year. I feel like I’m in some kind of bunker just waiting to spread out.” comments on his status Kubišová.

I’m blind to cats

But Marta doesn’t go out just for the dog. She and her neighbors founded a cat shelter for ten cats about 300 meters from her home. “We take turns feeding. When the neighbors are on vacation, it’s up to me,” explains the singer, who now visits the cats at night. “The last time I saw not only the road, but also the cats and the food I put in their bowls,” the singer narrated. “But I can’t go there in the daylight in this heat, that would hit me,” she added. “One great doctor, a pediatrician, has a huge garden, which he has provided shelter for cats from the neighborhood. We take care of them there,” Kubišová clarified the location of the “shelter”, adding that she also visits the vet with the cats and provides them with all the care they need. “Sometimes it’s already a struggle for me, I’m not the youngest,” stated Marta. Now it’s goodbye, okay, but… “Tomorrow may be different. That’s also why I told Vaško Neckář that I would like to sing for his 80th birthday in October, but I can’t promise that,” confided the singer.

A memory of August 1968

On Monday, it will be 55 years since Soviet tanks invaded us on August 21, 1968. Kubišová publicly spoke out against this and the communists banned her from singing. Since then, she has been nicknamed the Icon of Prague Spring. “They reported it on the radio in the morning and my mother said to me: Run for bread so we have something to eat,” Kubišová recalls. When she returned, they went to the Supraphon store in Celetná Street. “Mom took care of her and was afraid of looting. So she withdrew the money and rather hid it at home,” recalls the singer years later, for whom August 21 meant a ban on singing for 20 long years. “I don’t like to remember it, but I would definitely behave the same way today,” she is convinced.
