Former Tour commentator and evening stage presenter Mart Smeets has been under fire in the Netherlands for a long time because of a TV interview in which he dismissed reports of possible inappropriate behavior in his own way. Aïcha Marghadi stated that Smeets would have embarrassed her in front of a full editorial team, which interviewer Coen Verbraak wanted to denounce in an interview with him. Smeets said he had no knowledge of that event and at a certain point he got a bit tired of Verbraak’s questions about that subject. He later apologized.
“I never liked being interviewed by Mart after winning a world title or an Olympic title,” she said during the program on SBS6. ‘I never felt comfortable. I even had, at the sports election, where I was almost certain that I would become Sportswoman of the Year. Then he did a duo presentation together with Jack van Gelder. And then I was like: oh, I hope that if it were to be me, I wouldn’t be interviewed by him, because then I’d rather not be one. I just didn’t feel comfortable,” she explains.
Van Moorsel: ‘I didn’t feel comfortable next to Smeets’
Van Moorsel also explains why this happened. ‘He always thought it was important, even if you had achieved so much, that he was the most important. I just didn’t feel comfortable next to him. I never had that feeling with Dione or Jack van Gelder, but with Mart I just didn’t feel comfortable,” said the multiple world champion.
According to the cyclist, Smeets was all about a certain kind of arrogance. ‘He radiated that a bit. That’s a feeling he gave me, that’s how I felt,” Van Moorsel concludes of her experiences with the well-known face of cycling at the NOS.
