Marseille’s Drug War: Inside the Podcast Investigating the Deadly Conflict

It’s a podcast that takes us into a small district of Marseille that you’ve probably never heard of: the city of fathers, in the 14th arrondissement. A former shanty town that became an HLM housing estate in the 1980s. A district among many others, much less known than the Old Port, Belle de Mai or Estaque.
And yet, a neighborhood that all of Marseille has been looking at with concern since the start of the year, and more particularly since the night of April 2 to 3, 2023, nicknamed “the blue night”: three shootings that started here, 40 Kalashnikov bullets fired , 4 dead and dozens injured in a single night. Never before has Marseille experienced such a surge of violence in such a short time, a night which marked a turning point in the war which has been going on for months in Marseille for the control of drug trafficking in the northern districts of the city.
A night which is also the starting point of the investigation of this podcast proposed by Eric Miguet and Jean-Guillaume Bayard, two journalists from the Marseille daily La Provence which delve into the roots of this war which has already left nearly 50 dead and more than 110 injured in 2023. A war of unprecedented violence waged by two drug trafficking clans: Yoda and DZ Mafia.

But this podcast is about more than the litany of shootings. In this almost real-time investigation, the two journalists try to understand how this small neighborhood of Paternal, with its almost usual problems and deal points, has transformed in a few years into an issue for which organized gangs are ready to take action. an increasingly violent war. How the construction of a new motorway exit, for example, made this neighborhood a hub for drug trafficking, spreading throughout Marseille and beyond.

It’s exciting, worrying and close to the ground. 3 episodes are already available and can be discovered on the Radio France application, the rest of this investigation can be found every Wednesday on the website of the newspaper La Provence.
