Marseille take the lead with a thrashing of Stade Brestois

BrestMarseille, with renewed spirits under their new coach Roberto De Zerbi, started the 2024-2025 Ligue 1 in the best way, with a 5-1 victory on the Brest field this Saturday and positioning themselves as provisional leaders in the first day of the French tournament.

Improving on the 4-1 win over favourites Paris Saint-Germain in Le Havre the previous day, the Marseille side take the lead on goal difference.

Above all, it is a shot in the arm for the new project of Olympique Marseille, a team that was only able to finish eighth in Ligue 1 last season and which this year is determined to get back into the fight for the top spots.

Apart from Italian Roberto De Zerbi, former Brighton coach who decided to join Marseille when he had other important options on the table, the other focus of attention on Saturday was Englishman Mason Greenwood, new signing for Marseille, who scored two goals in the match (minutes 3 and 31 from a penalty).

Brazilian Luis Henrique also scored a double (26, 48) and Marseille’s other goal was scored in the 69th minute, with everything already decided, by Elye Wahi, also from a penalty.

Brest’s only goal was scored in the 45+6 by Mahdi Camara.

In the first half, Romain Del Castillo had missed a penalty that would have meant a provisional 1-1 and could have changed the script of the match. The hero there was Marseille’s new Argentine goalkeeper, Gerónimo Rulli, who saved the shot and put in a great performance in Brittany.

This victory for Marseilles is particularly significant as it came on the pitch of a team that shone particularly brightly last season, finishing third in the table, which means they will be one of France’s representatives in the Champions League which starts in September.
