On the ground, the glass debris bears witness to the explosion heard on the evening of December 24, 2023 by local residents, in the city center of Marseille. “We were watching television. I opened the blinds to see what was going on and I heard people shouting ‘Call the fire brigade, call the fire brigade!’ “, remembers this resident for example. It was 7:30 p.m. last night when a fire broke out on the second floor of a building in the city’s sixth arrondissement, creating panic. A man died, an 84-year-old woman injured and hospitalized.
70 firefighters still mobilized the next morning
This neighbor lives a few meters away. He was getting ready to wake up at the time of the incident. “We saw tiles that had fallen from the roof and we didn’t really try to understand. At first we tried to understand what had happened, we asked our neighbors who were in front of us and they , they had seen flames and the explosion. So we went out.” Nine people were evacuated. Some live in the neighboring building. On the morning of Monday, December 25, 2023, 70 firefighters remained mobilized, with an emergency: to make the site safe for the residents. “We are purging some window elements, so as to avoid any risk of falling, but there is not, as I speak to you, a risk of collapse”, explains Corvette Captain Guillaume Bataillon. An investigation is underway: it will determine the origin of the fire and confirm or not the explosion heard by witnesses to the tragedy.
