LONDON – Humans reported littering Plan March with trash even though they have never set foot on the planet.

According to several experts, various space debris that has accumulated on Mars includes pieces of landing gear, heat shields, used parachutes, rotor blades, drill bits and fabric nets.

There is also a British spacecraft, Beagle 2, which landed on Mars in December 2003 but was later reported missing from the planet.

As reported by the Daily Start, Friday (2/2/2024), the new map released by scientists also reveals the location of the debris from the spacecraft that landed on Mars 53 years ago.

The location of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ingenuity helicopter which ended its mission this week due to damage to the propeller was also revealed.

An aerospace engineering professor at West Virginia University said there is an estimated 7,118 kilograms of space debris on Mars.

A spacecraft debris researcher at the University of Warwick, Dr. James Blake says that future missions to explore Mars need to be ‘designed with sustainability factors in mind’.

This includes a spacecraft design that does not discard components when landing on Mars and can return to Earth after its mission ends.
