It’s time for Malou and Sarath’s final conversation in ‘Married at First Sight’. It has been clear for a long time that the experiment did not work for them. It’s no surprise that the two decide to divorce.
“I haven’t had a voice for a week”
Sarath takes a seat in the room with Carlo Boszhard and the experts. “A lot has happened in a short time and I have been able to give it a place,” he says. For Malou it is not that simple. She experienced the experiment in a negative way. “I’m really glad this roller coaster is going to end soon.”
Malou feels that she had to ignore herself during the experiment. Even though she doesn’t feel a love connection with Sarath, she continues the adventure for him. “I didn’t want to come across as a bitch, even though I don’t feel it. Everything in me said: I don’t want this.” Nevertheless, Malou has no problem sitting next to Sarath again. “I don’t feel anything about it.”
They both wrote a letter for the other. Malou starts her story by saying that she likes ‘openness and honesty’ and points out Sarath’s ‘mood swings’. “Like I took a lollipop from a child, gave it back and then took it away again.”
Malou has learned to stay close to herself. She no longer wants to lie to herself to make others feel better. “If I had known everything in advance, I would have said ‘no’ at the altar.” The adventure made Malou so depressed that a week after returning from the honeymoon she ‘literally became ill’. “All the emotions came out. I had no voice for a week.”
Sarath has also written a letter in which he mainly describes the wonderful time with Malou. “I am grateful that what started as an adventure has turned into a beautiful journey.” Through the experiment he has gotten to know himself better and he no longer wants to change for anyone else. “I want to be myself and that’s why it can never work out between us,” he says to Malou.
The fact that the relationship between Sarath and Malou turned out this way affects expert Eveline Stallaart. “I see two people who did not get what they really longed for and I find that very sad.”
Despite the harsh words, Malou and Sarath are able to end the experiment on a good note. “Sarath and I are not angry with each other either,” Malou emphasizes. After handing in the rings, they go their separate ways.
Malou is positive about the future and looks forward to moving forward. “I can be who I am and I am proud of that.” Sarath is also positive. “I leave here with a good feeling. Proud that I was able to experience this and have reached the point where I am now.” He says he has a bright future ahead of him. “I can carry all of this with me. For the rest of my life.”
